Frequently asked questions

When should I renew my membership?

Membership in the University South Caroliniana Society is based on the calendar year, with annual renewal notices sent in late November or early December for the coming year. If you renew your membership after November 1, we will apply your renewal to the coming year.

If you start a new membership after the annual meeting held in the spring, your new membership will run through the following calendar year to ensure that you are a member at the time of the next annual meeting. You will then be asked to renew in late November or early December after the first annual meeting for which you have been a member.

Does membership for a couple cost more than membership for an individual?

No. Regular membership, whether for a single individual or a couple, starts at $30. We have additional membership levels and are grateful for your generosity. If you and your spouse or partner are both interested in the work of the Society, we encourage you to list both your names.

How can I view past issues of Caroliniana Columns or the Annual Report of Gifts?

Visit sc.edu/libraries/uscs and follow the links.

Why is there an additional fee for donating online?

This is a fee charged by Eventbrite. If you pay by check through the mail, this fee does not apply. See your renewal notice or membership form for more information. Note, we can accept credit card payments only through Eventbrite -- not through the mail.

Is the University South Caroliniana Society part of the University of South Carolina?

No. The University South Caroliniana Society is a separate 501(c)3 that supports the South Caroiniana Library. The South Caroiniana Library is a special collections unit of University Libraries at the University of South Carolina.

How can I contact the South Caroliniana Library?

Organized by

The University South Caroliniana Society is the private, non-profit patron organization supporting the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina. The Society works to acquire and preserve materials documenting South Carolina's history and culture.

The Society was founded in 1937 at the invitation of University President J. Rion McKissick and the Caroliniana Committee to help build the University’s South Carolina collection. To assure the permanence of its work, the Society was incorporated in 1951. Since then the Society has functioned as a private, non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting a better understanding and appreciation of South Carolina, its history and culture.

Membership dues and income from the Society's endowment are primarily devoted to the purchase and preservation of South Carolina materials for the South Caroliniana Library's collection. Scholars from around the globe use the collection to enhance our understanding of South Carolina’s history and how that history has helped shape the South, the United States, and the world.
